Local Flavors

Packaging Design

A community-based project with family owned restaurants in the Outer Sunset, SF.

Family-Owned Businesses

The Sunset District of San Francisco is filled with mom and pop businesses, constantly bustling with locals and tourists alike. These family-owned businesses are a staple of making the neighborhood so inviting and livable, and were a large part of my life as a college student living in the area. A few of my household’s favorites were Manna, Sushi Goemon, and Uncle Benny’s.

The catch for this project, was to ensure that the new packaging options were affordable and easily produced for each of the companies, with research going toward manufacturing options and cost-effective solutions.

Manna

A Korean restaurant in the Inner Sunset that makes some of the most comforting, warm, flavorful dishes I can remember. Drawing inspiration from traditional Korean ceramics, this packaging is meant to bring an upscale feeling to the restaurant’s to-go boxes and chopsticks.

Sushi Goemon

Any night of the week, you can expect to find Goemon filled with customers, large and small groups alike, all enjoying some of the best sushi in town. There is a certain approachability and comfort that is present as soon as you walk through the door, which I made sure to translate to the proposed packaging. I utilized some of their existing illustrations along with a modular system which can be adapted to fit multiple packaging types.

Uncle Benny’s

Nothing like some homemade donuts or breakfast sandwiches to start your day, the best in the area coming from Uncle Benny’s. Some of the friendliest staff I’ve come across paired with lots of local customers makes this place a neighborhood gem. The focus for the donut shop was to create a fun sticker collection that could easily be used for any of their boxes, bags, or coffee cups.

Presentation

To cap off this semester-long project, I presented my work at the San Francisco SOMArts gallery alongside my classmates. I chose to emulate my apartment’s living room, bringing this new takeout packaging to where it would be enjoyed most.
